The initial attire for tertiary institutions and secondary schools is called academic regalia. They were characteristically reserved for academic functions such as graduations. The academic regalia have been subjective to the traditions of academic attire and it still remains the academic attire of choice for most formal occasion in an educational setting.

It is necessary to wear the academic regalia during the whole graduation ceremony. The most regular color of the graduation robe is black unlike choral robes which come in varieties of colors depending on the wearer’s preference. Normally, the shoes and pants or dress should match the color of the robe. The caps that are worn by academic graduates differ according to the stage of education accomplishment. They are more officially known as a mortarboard, bonnet, or tam in academic regalia. The hood is a piece of academic regalia that is normally put on the wearer ceremoniously when he or she has earned it, but only one hood and a single trim color may be worn at a time. The only exemption is for faculty of the educational institution. These people usually wear faculty regalia. Academic robes are usually worn over dresses and suits for official events in an educational setting, and usually fall between the mid-calf to the ankle.

Make sure that the cap with the mortarboard on your academic regalia is at the same level with the ground. The caps on your faculty regalia should be worn during the whole ceremony. Men are sometimes required to remove the cap during prayers or national anthem. The cue for removing the caps at these times is normally addressed in advance but if they are not, look at the person who is presiding and follow their lead.

Put the tassel on your academic regalia on your right hand side before you are awarded the academic degrees. Here, there are different types of degrees. Bachelor’s degree where you wear bachelor’s regalia, master’s degree where you wear masters regalia, doctoral degree where you wear a doctoral gown and PhD degree where you wear PhD regalia. The members of each faculty like lecturers will then wear faculty regalia. Once the degrees have been awarded, you can move the tassel to your left hand side. This is not a rule but it is common practice. Therefore, one has a choice to do it or not to do it.

The doctoral hood is normally worn over the doctoral gown. For some degrees, like a doctoral or master's, the graduate will put on the doctoral hood as they are being given the diploma. For degrees that are awarded in mass, the doctoral hood should be worn over the doctoral gown during the ceremony until it comes to an end. In spite of this law, many tertiary institutions have detached the hood from the doctoral gown for the bachelor's degrees and they are worn with no hood.

It is also necessary to roll the edging of the hood to the outside so as to let the inside colors of the hood be seen. The last part of the hood should look like a fin and should not be twisted inside out. It should be worn parallel to the ground.
